When asking a former employer, teacher, or friend to write a reference letter for you is not something that should be taken lightly. Usually, if you are requesting a reference you are applying for something that could affect your life, and thus it should be taken seriously.
Learning how to write a letter of reference is not that difficult. It doesn't even have to be wordy or long. You only need to explain how the person is related or known to you. You also need to put down how long you have known the person. This would determine how well you know the person. A letter of recommendation for someone you have known only known for two days is not really credible.
Follow these steps to be fair to everyone involved:
* Usually, do not agree to write a letter of recommendation for someone unless you know the person reasonably well and can honestly write a supportive letter. He or she will not benefit much from a vague or disinterested letter. * Stay positive, honest and personal. Use personal stories or observations about your work experiences with the job seeker. * Choose your words carefully and take your time. * The length of letters of recommendation can vary, but five or six paragraphs is usually the minimum. * Remember to sign the letter before mailing it.

It is indeed a pleasure to write in support of Name's application for a position at your company.
Name is organized, efficient, extremely competent, and has an excellent rapport with people of all ages. Her communication skills, both written and verbal, are excellent.
Name is one of the top students in my class. She received the highest grade in the class during the fall semester which was one of the highest grades I have ever awarded. Name’s class participation indicates an enthusiasm for the subject and a passion to persue it. Name is also active in several student organizations. Name is well liked by her fellow students.
Name’s resume clearly demonstrates her academic qualifications, which are outstanding. Beyond that, in my course she demonstrated a healthy approach to the subject matter. In a large class, her comments and questions always pointedly and helpfully relevant. She did not occupy class time unduly with her interests, but per word uttered in class, I can think of no student who contributed more to the success of the course.
Name was always willing to offer her assistance and had an excellent rapport with the many constituents served by our office including clients, employers, and other professional organizations. She would be an asset to any employer and I recommend her for any endeavor she chooses to pursue.
Yours truly,
Your Name
