Letters of recommendation can provide the big picture of your overall promise and potential, something not necessarily revealed by test scores, but every bit as important for predicting success in a graduate program. Admissions committees know this, and they read letters carefully.


If you've been requested to write a letter of recommendation for another, and you feel both comfortable and qualified to do so, request that the candidate provide you with a copy of his or her resume, and a list of important qualifications. * State why the opportunity to support this job seeker excites you and say how you feel about being asked to write this reference letter.
* A reference letter verifies experience, confirms competence, builds credibility and bolsters confidence.
