Help Writing A College Recommendation Letter

When asking a former employer, teacher, or friend to write a reference letter for you is not something that should be taken lightly. Usually, if you are requesting a reference you are applying for something that could affect your life, and thus it should be taken seriously.

Emphasize key points that you want the reader to note on the applicant's resume or job application. Be sure to meaningfully elaborate, don't simply restate. Give specific examples to back up what you have said about the person's qualifications and character.

The following tips and strategies apply primarily to the writing of letters of recommendation in their various forms.

* Start wrapping it up with a recommendation to hire.
* Use a professional vocabulary and style; write as if you were the employer providing the letter.
* If you are a relative of the person, reconsider whether you are the best person for this task. Relatives in most cases are not good choices for recommendation letters as there will be a fear of bias.
* State the best time and place the recipient can reach you.
* Be sure to provide your contact information and invite the employer to call you if he or she wishes to further discuss or clarify the person.
